GRAND PRIX

 NUN OR NEVER

 Heta Jäälinoja

Böhle Studios

Finland

Award Statement

With a skillful animation process, the author combines artistic elements, characters and their clothes, which have an important symbolic meaning, into a form that constantly metamorphoses: From community to individual and personal, and back again. By playing with the stereotype of nuns, the film shows us that we cannot know what goes on under the clothes that "cover" all our secrets. By thoughtfully using contrasts in color, sound and music, the author creates a convincing film world that is simultaneously strong, meditative and witty, at the same time questioning: Is it possible to achieve spiritual strength and peace without rejecting the original liveliness and unrestrainedness of human nature.

The jury of the 12th Animator fest decided to award the Grand Prix of the festival to the film "Nun or never" by author Heta Halinoja.

 Award Statement

The frantic, at times disturbing, storytelling of this animation perfectly captures the emotional tension and insecurity of the teenage protagonist. This is why we are drawn to this distorted portrayal of a relationship, where lies gradually widen the gap, culminating in the mother’s question: 'Do you trust me?'For its cheeky style and the provocative and ironic impact, we award a special mention to Bunnyhood by Mansi Maheshwari.
